Product Description

"THE IMPERIAL SAUCER

The Emperor's House in the Field was composed of a large number of various services involving the military, as regards the operation of the General Staff, and civilian personnel for the service of the army. table, horse care, organization of teams and cars. All these personnel were divided into three distinct groups: the cabinet (secretariat, drafting and dispatching orders), the aides-de-camp and the order officers (protection of the person of the Emperor, transmission of oral orders and writings) and finally the service of the Grand Ecuyer, who was in charge of organizing the movements of Napoleon. So it was General Armand de Caulaincourt who took care of choosing the saddle and carriage horses and the various cars used by the crew train of the imperial quarter. Its mission was also to ensure the safety of the convoys, to choose the stages, the location of the relay stations, and to order the couriers responsible for establishing the link between the postillions and the stable valets responsible for changing the horses.

Caulaincourt, named Grand Ecuyer in June 1804, served Napoleon zealously, demonstrating a boundless activity and an admirable concern for economy in the management of the stables and the car park of the Emperor's house. He was assisted in this difficult task by cavalry colonels with prestigious names: Lefebvre-Desnouettes, Defrance, Durosnel and Watier de Saint-Alphonse; these four brilliant squires all had an outstanding military career.

For the movements of more than two hundred kilometers, the convoy consisted of four carriages: one served for the Emperor himself, two others were assigned to the aides-de-camp and orderly officers; and the last contained personal effects, instruments, spectacles, rulers, compasses, maps and all the material necessary for the functioning of the secretariat. Of course, the regulatory escort of horse guards was walking in front of and behind the imperial car. There were several models of harnessed vehicles: for the small rapid displacements one used a light car with two places, but for the more important journeys, Napoleon rode in a heavy sedan with four places, drawn generally by a team of four horses. If his Majesty wanted to rest, we could close the shutters of the doors and turn the sedan into a sleeper.

This is how Etains du Prince presents it to you, with its four horses, two of which are mounted by the postillions.
