"THE LEGION OF HONOR
Unlike most French people, the legion of honor established, not by the Emperor Napoleon, but by Napoleon Bonaparte First Consul, is not quite an order of chivalry, nor a decoration. It certainly resembles the decorations of the old regime, if only by the color of the ribbon, scarlet red for the royal and military order of St. Louis.
The 22 Floréal X (May 19, 1802) legion of honor, which is probably the most famous decoration, both in France and abroad, is intended to reward the courage of the military, as well as services and the civil virtues.
The famous five-pointed star was only adopted in 1804, under the Empire. The first rebates to the holders took place on July 15 of this year at the Invalides in Paris for the civilians, and at the camp of Boulogne for the soldiers on August 16th.
Still classified in five categories: knight, officer, commander (today commander) who are ranks, then grand officer and grand Eagle (today Grand Cross) who are dignities.
It was however clear that Napoleon wanted to create a new nobility, but unlike that of the old regime, it would be based solely on the personal merits, courage, work, fidelity and love of the fatherland . The men who wore the star with five double spokes, enamelled in white, surmounted by a crown of oak and laurel, appended to a moire ribbon of fire color, will somehow evolve in a single party, where they will be able to to speak freely, at the level of a local cohort, of comrade to comrade, with a minister or a marshal of France.
The Etains du Prince wanted to illustrate this event by creating a scene, according to the painting by Jean-Baptiste Debret (historical museum of Versailles), where we see the Emperor, in the chapel of the Invalides, handing over to an old man Mutilated soldier, the cross of the brave.
The legion of honor, after a few vicissitudes, remains today the supreme reward of the best of our society, the paragons of our civic virtues. "
