Product Description

DESCRIPTION:

"Grognard is the name given to the soldiers of the Old Guard of Napoleon Bonaparte. They were the most experienced of the Grand Army, but also the most loyal to the emperor, who had nicknamed them as they complained about their living conditions. Some of them followed Napoleon during his exile on the island of Elba.

""They felt the fire and the powder,"" wrote Chateaubriand... These old men had an impassioned worship for Napoleon, who said, ""I pass for a terrible man in the salons, but not among the soldiers.""

In fact, the Emperor had for his soldiers a kind of paternal tenderness. He lived in the midst of his troop, often ate with his men; he was seen on the eve of Austerlitz, distributing a dozen big pigs ""captured"" by grenadiers on horseback; six for them and six for him and his generals; Coignet says that everyone laughs heartily at this sharing of Solomon. And his soldiers gave him this affection, sometimes going as far as idolatry. Napoleon at Saint Helena confided to Las Cases ""they had the instinct for truth and sympathy, they knew me their protector, if need be their avenger! ""

Of course, all the forced marches, the bivouacs in the open air, the sometimes incomprehensible maneuvers, the problematic or even nonexistent supplies made these brave three-haired grumbling, which earned them the famous nickname of ""grognards"". But these men were still walking behind their sacred eagles, ready to ""eat the earth,"" waving the skin of their brow to bring down their teddy-bear to their eyes; their terrible look and contempt for rage, through their mustaches, showed their teeth like tigers, and provoked an unspeakable fear in the enemy; and when they wielded in a furious movement, their bayonets pointed, and the sword-lighter ready to burst forth from its scabbard, they made the adversary tremble and frighten him until the rout.

He Etains du Prince were inspired by a famous painting by Auguste Raffet (1836) to make this painting."
