More Details
The forging of a Chinese sword is a subtle and careful process, an art that has developed over the centuries as much in response to stylistic and aesthetic considerations as to technical improvements.
3,000 years ago, the bronze swords were created during Western Chou dynasty around 1122-770 B.C., the iron swords with the bronze handle were created during Warring States Period around 475-221 B.C., the iron and steel sword has replaced the bronze during Han Dynasty around 206 B.C. - A.D. 220.
Today, swords are still being made by modern artisans. They continue to hold a unique place in Chinese culture; some pursue the traditional methods, while others apply modern tools, techniques, and materials to the craft. A great number of commercially available swords are being made in China and Cambodia with modern tools and materials employing traditional methods.
Another reason for the great popularity of the Chinese swords is that an authentic Chinese sword, handmade in China, can easily cost US$12,000 to $25,000 and up. Chinese made production level approximations are typical $1,000-$2,500 for something reasonably traditional.
